This week the Erasmus+ project, “Life life, give life” has celebrated the mobility in Marta Mata secondary school with partners from Italy, Lithuania and Turkey. 8 students and 2 teachers from each country visited our school and stayed in a hotel in Salou during this week.
In one of the scheduled activities about Organ Donation, Jorge Twose, who is in charge of the communication team of the OCCAT, the Catalan Organization of Transplants talked about the process of organ donations and receivers that exists in Catalonia. It is one of the most important tasks because they provide the organs to hospitals and save people’s lives. Jorge Twose wanted to introduce us to a witness, Rosana, mum of a son who has a liver transplant, came here to talk about organ donation and her personal experience. She is also a member of a children’s association with transplants, ANINATH.
We had the opportunity to interview them and asked them some questions:
Can anyone donate organs?
In general yes, we have some medical contraindications like cancer, infections but in general everyone can donate and receive.
What happens if the organ is damaged during the process?
If it is damaged during the process, we need to descart it.
If the body rejects the given organ, where will the organ end up?
There is a deposit of medical rejections, and destroying the organ. It Is like a crematori.
What organs are given in life?
Liver and kidney.
Which transplants are most dangerous?
Probably, the liver is very complicated. But the intervention of kidney transplantation lasts 2 or 3 hours and there are 3 people working. In the case of liver transplantation, 6/8/9 hours depending on the situacion and there are 15 people in the operation, but also lungs are difficult as well.

How did you feel when the doctors say that your son needed a transplant??
In the Catalan association this topic is not tabu, it is usually among the society. It is a very dramatic news, but you can afront it. But it depends too on the character of each person.
How long did it take for the transplantation of your son?
6 months on the waiting list and the operation took 12 hours.
It was an interesting talk about the organs for the students to become aware of this issue and it was important that they had this talk to know information about this topic.
